Pastel oil is actually called oil pastel. It is a type of art medium consisting of pigment mixed with a binder of non-drying oil and wax. The oil gives oil pastel colors a smooth, buttery consistency that allows for smooth blending and layering. Oil pastels are commonly used by artists as an alternative to traditional oil paints because they are easier to use and do not require the use of solvents. Oil pastels are generally more vibrant than traditional pastels and provide a unique texture and depth to artwork. They are commonly used on paper, canvas, and other surfaces. Oil pastels were first developed in Japan by Sakura and were first introduced to the United States in 1949 by the company we know as Crayola.
